The Government of Meghalaya, Health & Family Welfare Department, is undertaking the establishment of Proposed Shillong Medical College (SMC) with the objective of strengthening medical education and enhancing healthcare services within the State. The project is prioritized as a brownfield initiative, with the following key developments:
The Pasteur Institute is being converted into an Academic Block, incorporating classrooms, library, laboratories, an administrative block, museums, and other essential facilities in compliance with National Medical Commission (NMC) norms.
Shillong Civil Hospital and Ganesh Das Government MCH Hospital shall serve as designated Teaching Hospitals for an annual MBBS intake of 50 students. While 220 teaching hospital beds are required per NMC norms, Shillong Civil Hospital has 450 operational beds, and Ganesh Das Government MCH Hospital has 400, exceeding the requirement.
Preparatory work is underway for the execution of a greenfield expansion of the Proposed Medical College project. This proposed phase envisions the addition of 50 MBBS seats and 50 Postgraduate seats within the same campus, to be operationalized in the near future, subject to regulatory approvals and compliance with the norms prescribed by the National Medical Commission (NMC).
